The mayor of Prescott has expressed gratitude to voters for approving Proposition 478, which aims to enhance public safety facilities in the city. This measure was passed on November 5 and introduces a dedicated sales tax of 0.95% to fund new fire stations, police evidence facilities, and staffing. The tax rate is set to decrease to 0.75% by December 31, 2035, or earlier once capital expenses are covered.
The newly approved tax will be implemented starting April 1, 2025. The city plans to announce proposed locations for fire stations by the end of this year, with planning beginning in early 2025 and construction expected in the latter half of that year. Improvements are also planned for existing facilities to ensure they are functional and safe for first responders. The completion and full staffing of these new facilities are anticipated by July 1, 2028.
Both police and fire departments will receive adequate funding to support increased staffing as new facilities become operational. Fire Chief Holger Durre has indicated plans to have six new recruits join the Spring 2025 training academy.
These developments aim to create a safer Prescott with faster emergency response times and modernized stations equipped with sufficient staff levels for the city's growing needs.
The mayor emphasized transparency in government spending as a priority. An OpenGov software platform will be introduced so citizens can monitor city expenditures online, with an expected launch in early 2025.
In closing remarks during the holiday season, the mayor encouraged residents to enjoy local festivities and support businesses while extending wishes for a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Hanukkah.
