About Tracing Time: “Centuries dissolve. You’ve stepped into a portal, an eye, the open mouth of time. One small pecking can do it, a rough antlered deity no taller than a finger. It is one word in a grand storytelling that spans the Colorado Plateau, this land of rock,” writes Craig Childs in Tracing Time. In ten literary essays with original illustrations, Childs bears intimate witness to rock art of the Colorado Plateau. The smallest figure on stone is a story of ancestry, ceremonies, trade routes, wars. With generosity, humility, and love of the arid, intricate landscapes of the desert Southwest, Childs sets ancient communications in context, inviting readers to look and listen.
