Arizona has introduced stricter sentencing laws for those convicted of fentanyl trafficking, following the recent passage of HB2607. Sponsored by Republican State Representative Quang Nguyen, the bill targets individuals found with 200 grams or more of fentanyl in a vehicle with intent to distribute. The legislation stipulates a minimum sentence of five years, with a presumptive term of ten years and a maximum of fifteen. Repeat offenders will incur an additional five years.

“Fentanyl is killing our kids and ripping apart families,” stated Representative Nguyen. “Anyone moving this amount of the deadly drug through our state is a trafficker, plain and simple—and they should be locked up for a long time. Arizona families deserve to be protected, and that means getting these criminals off the streets before they do more harm. This new law gives law enforcement the tools they need to do that.”

The law aligns with the House Republican Majority Plan's focus on enhancing public safety and border security, aiming to hold traffickers accountable and increase penalties for repeat offenses, thus reducing the incidence of repeat offenders in Arizona.
