Prescott College issued the following announcement on Jan. 20.
We’re excited to share the news that Professor Eleanor Tison has been appointed Co-Director of The Green Mountain Center for Sustainability at Prescott College. She joins Laird Christensen in overseeing the work of the center, focusing mostly on the activities, events, and service that take place on and around the Prescott campus. Anyone who has previously worked with Eleanor knows what a remarkable force she is in motivating students and other members of the community to put their values to work!
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Eleanor attended Dartmouth College as an undergraduate, pursuing a double major in Anthropology and History. It was while at Dartmouth that she met her future husband, Mark Dailey, who also teaches at Prescott College. After graduating, Eleanor and Mark relocated to the University of Georgia for graduate school, where Eleanor’s studies in environmental anthropology focused specifically on biodiversity in agricultural systems. Eventually the couple ended up in Vermont, where they taught at Green Mountain College for seventeen years.
When Prescott College absorbed a number of programs, students, and staff from GMC in 2019, Eleanor and her family found themselves moving to the Central Arizona Highlands, where they have been instrumental in helping establish the Green Mountain Center for Sustainability and creating a stronger sense of community around campus. From overseeing the development of a campus-wide compost pick-up system to creating or rejuvenating a number of campus gardens, Eleanor’s impact is visible on both sides of Butte Creek. You can often find her meeting with students in Cicada Hall, planting seedlings, making sauerkraut or salsa, or chopping vegetables for a community meal.
In addition to her role as the Co-Director of the Green Mountain Center for Sustainability at Prescott College, Eleanor serves on the Faculty Leadership Council, the Sustainability Council, and Co-Directs the undergraduate Core Curriculum with Mark Dailey. Eleanor and Mark’s commitment to the Prescott College community is very much a family affair: one daughter, Eleanor Dailey, works in the Financial Aid Office, and her sister Emma recently completed her BA in Arts and Humanities at Prescott College.
Like other faculty and staff who made the move to Prescott from Vermont, Eleanor is thrilled to help continue our work here in Arizona, and to explore new opportunities to create sustainable food systems in a much different setting. Please join us in congratulating Eleanor on yet another leadership role within the Prescott College community!
