YC Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration brings community together

Announcement2

Yavapai College issued the following annoucement on Sept. 14.

Yavapai College is observing National Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 like never before, hosting a variety of activities that will make it easy for the entire community to immerse themselves in the rich culture and history of our fellow Americans.

The celebration came together under the leadership of a diverse group of YC students, faculty and staff dedicated to sharing the vibrance and the warmth of the Hispanic community that touches us all. Students are decorating and bringing Hispanic flavor to each of the YC’s six campuses and centers across Yavapai County with food, films, art, music, dancing, Spanish-language learning and more.

“The Roughrider ambassadors and others in the YC Community are making this celebration something special. We were unable to celebrate last year so we’re making up for it this year. We hope it brings everyone together in the spirit of community, inclusion and belonging that we value highly at YC,” said Janice Soutee, YC director of leadership and student engagement.

The four-week Hispanic Heritage Month celebration kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 15, with a fiesta of Mexican food all day at the Prescott campus rider diner, as well as a photo booth for celebratory images with friends.

Next week, on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23, the Prescott and Verde campuses respectively, are hosting outdoor screenings of the animated feature “Coco.” Pinatas and more fun are part of each movie night, both of which begin at 7 p.m.

The following week, on Sept. 30, Verde Valley students are hosting an Hispanic Heritage Month game night. Game night is set for 6 p.m. in Building M-Room 137 on the Verde Valley campus. On Friday, Oct. 1. YC Spanish Professor Dr. Curtis Kleinman will deliver a talk about how to “embrace your inner bilingualism” and sharply improve your language learning ability. Kleinman’s talk is at noon in B-19, Room 147, on the Prescott campus.

The YC Library is debuting a new monthly Spanish Café in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The initial language exchange will take place at both the YC and Verde Valley campus libraries at noon Wednesday Oct. 6. Coffee and churros will be provided. All are welcome to attend each first-Wednesday-of-the month Spanish Café at no charge.

Thursday, Oct. 7 is a big HHM celebration day at the both the Verde and Prescott campuses. A salsa dance party, hosted by Latin dance instructor Daniel Garcia, will take place at noon on the Prescott campus courtyard. It will be followed that evening by a screening of the film, “Tortilla Soup” at both the Prescott and the Verde Valley campuses.

YC will close out Hispanic Heritage Month with a community celebration Wednesday, Oct. 13, featuring YC President Dr. Lisa Rhine and renowned mask artist Zarco Guerrero sharing his art, his process and his influence: the late Cesar Chavez.
