The City of Sedona has scheduled a public hearing to discuss a proposed 3.6% increase in wastewater rates for residential and commercial customers. The hearing will take place during the regular city council meeting at City Hall on August 13, 2024, at 4:30 p.m.
If approved, the new rates would be effective from October 2024. Residents on low-flow billing currently pay $47.52, which would rise to $49.23. Those on standard billing would see their rates increase from $61.11 to $63.31.
The city's Wastewater Department has faced rising operating costs due to increases in materials, supplies, labor, contracted work, and lab testing, resulting in a 22% cost increase over the past six years. Additional expenses stem from repairs and upgrades to aging infrastructure and new regulatory requirements.
City Council voted on June 12, 2024, to issue a notice of intent to raise wastewater rates, leading to the upcoming public hearing.
"In advance of a comprehensive rate study planned for this fiscal year, it has become clear that raising wastewater rates is inevitable since the goal is to be a self-sustaining utility. While rates haven’t been raised in several years, this inflationary adjustment is a good start to meeting this goal," said Communications Director Lauren Browne.
