Today, the United States House of Representatives approved the Subterranean Border Defense Act. This legislation was reintroduced by Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) and Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA). The bill aims to address the growing threat posed by cross-border tunnels used by Transnational Criminal Organizations along the southwest border of the United States.
Since 1990, more than 140 tunnels have been discovered breaching the U.S. border, with an 80% increase in tunnel activity since 2008. According to Rep. Crane, "Passage of this bill is a massive win for our security." He noted that while border crossings have decreased since January, there is a concern that threats may now come through tunnels beneath the border.
The act seeks to enhance border security by increasing Congressional oversight of illicit cross-border tunnel operations. "Put simply, this legislation would help ensure that Congress has the necessary data to forge another much-needed layer of defense," said Rep. Crane.
Rep. Crane expressed gratitude to Chairman Green, Rep. Correa, and colleagues for their support of the bill, emphasizing that effective border security relies on overlapping deterrents.
