The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has updated its plans for daytime full closures and single-lane restrictions on State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon. The original announcement indicated that the road would be fully open between 5 p.m. and 5 a.m. from June 3 to June 7, but it has since been clarified that the roadway will be open to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel during those hours.

From June 3 to June 7, SR 89A will be fully closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. between the switchbacks and the Oak Creek Vista area (mileposts 387-390). Northbound drivers from Sedona to Flagstaff are advised to use State Route 179 to Interstate 17, while southbound drivers from Flagstaff to Sedona should use I-17 to SR 179.

After work hours each day, the roadway will reopen with a temporary traffic signal directing one-lane travel in alternating directions between northbound and southbound traffic. Residences and businesses located north and south of the closure area will remain accessible during these times.

In addition, SR 89A will be restricted to one lane with alternating travel through late August. This restriction is necessary due to repair work resulting from a rockfall event in March 2023. Drivers should anticipate delays of up to 15 minutes when passing through the work zone, where a temporary traffic signal will manage traffic flow. A vehicle-width restriction of ten feet and reduced speed limits will also be enforced in this area.

There may be intermittent full closures of SR 89A between June 10 and late August as construction activities require them. ADOT has committed to providing advance notice for these closures.

ADOT is coordinating closely with emergency responders to ensure access for emergency vehicles throughout the duration of these restrictions and closures.
