The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has issued a press release advising drivers, residents, and businesses to prepare for upcoming daytime full closures and lane restrictions on State Route 89A in Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. The department stated that these restrictions are necessary for repair work in Oak Creek Canyon due to a rockfall event that occurred in March 2023.

Full closures will take place from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7. During this period, both north- and southbound SR 89A will be closed to all traffic between the switchbacks and the Oak Creek Vista area (mileposts 387-390).

Northbound detours for Sedona area drivers heading to Flagstaff will utilize State Route 179 to Interstate 17. Similarly, southbound detours for Flagstaff area drivers heading to Sedona will use I-17 to SR 179. The roadway is scheduled to reopen each day after work hours.

Despite the closure, residences and businesses located north and south of the affected area in Oak Creek Canyon will remain accessible.

From Monday, June 10 until late August, SR 89A will be narrowed down to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel between the switchbacks and Oak Creek Vista (mileposts 387-390). A temporary traffic signal will be installed to direct traffic through the work zone. During this period, drivers should anticipate delays of up to 15 minutes while navigating through the work zone. A vehicle-width restriction of ten feet will also be implemented, along with a reduced speed limit.

Intermittent full closures of SR 89A are expected between June 10 and late August when construction activities necessitate it. ADOT assured that they would provide advance notice of these full closures.
