Sedona Police Department’s K9 Sam has received the bullet and stab protective vest first reported in February 2024, thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Sam’s vest was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of K9 Hobbs, Des Moines, IA - EOW 12-12-23”.

According to the Sedona Police Department, the donation of the body armor is crucial in ensuring the safety of K9 officers like Sam. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., the organization behind the donation, has been providing such vests to law enforcement dogs across the United States since its establishment in 2009. The organization's mission is to offer protection to K9 officers who put their lives on the line in service to their communities.

"This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and NIJ certified," said a representative from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s in the country, the need for such protective gear is significant.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. relies on donations to sponsor these vests, with each vest costing $1800. A single donation of $985 can sponsor one vest, providing essential protection to a K9 officer. The organization has provided over 5,514 vests to K9s in all 50 states, valued at $6.9 million, thanks to the generosity of both individuals and corporations.

For those interested in supporting the cause or learning more about volunteer opportunities, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. can be reached at 508-824-6978. Donations can also be made through their website at www.vik9s.org, or by mail to P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718.
