State Route 89A north of uptown Sedona has reopened to traffic on Friday morning, Dec. 15, after being closed earlier this week for necessary repair work. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) worked diligently to remove loose rocks and unstable material from a slope along SR 89A, ensuring safer conditions for highway travel.
"The highway has reopened, but the road surface is rough due to the removal of damaged pavement from falling rocks during blasting," stated the ADOT news release. Crews are scheduled to repave the affected section of SR 89A on Saturday to improve the road conditions.
Drivers are advised to anticipate certain restrictions until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16. SR 89A will be reduced to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel between the Owenby Way roundabout and the Midgley Bridge picnic area, specifically mileposts 375-376. On-site flaggers and a pilot car will guide drivers through the work zone, and the speed limit will be reduced in the area.
The closure of the highway was necessary to ensure the safety of drivers. During the rock mitigation work, debris and sediment fell onto the roadway as crews cleared the slope above SR 89A. ADOT expresses gratitude to the public for their patience and understanding during this process aimed at improving highway conditions and ensuring the safety of all travelers.
It is crucial for drivers to exercise caution and adhere to any instructions provided by flaggers and pilot cars while traveling through the work zone. The ADOT and its contractor are working diligently to minimize any inconvenience caused by the ongoing repairs.
