Operation Snowfall 2023- Thorne Valley

Our Navajo County Deputy that is assigned to the Navajo Nation Reservation worked with Pinon Chapter House members, and a medical team to rescue an elderly woman.

On January 22, 2023, Deputy Simonson traveled to Thorne Valley which is located in the Black Mesa area 19 miles northeast of Pinon. There was a call for a welfare check on an elderly woman who lives alone and her family had not heard from her in several days. With the amount of snow that had fallen, there was no way a vehicle would make it to her residence. The rescue team drove as far as they could and continued the call for service on foot. In the freezing temperatures and continued snowfall, the team hiked two miles in nearly four feet of snow to her house. As the team approached the house, the woman broke down in tears grateful for the team that had gone above and beyond to rescue her. She had advised she attempted an SOS text message with no response, so she went to her truck and honked the horn hoping someone would hear her distress call with no success. The woman was without food, electricity, water, and no phone service. When the rescue team found her, she was bundled up in layers of clothes and had not eaten in days. The medical team evaluated her before removing her from the home, she was then reunited with her sister.

We cannot express enough how grateful we are that our deputies will exceed their call for service, and work together with all the different entities in Navajo County. We are thankful for the outcome of this call.
