Yavapai Health Services to offer free prediabetes testing at Cottonwood Library

Yavapai County Community Health Services recognizes November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and a time for residents to assess their risk for developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. The County seeks to improve education about how this disease adversely affects our community, and to offer free testing for prediabetes.

On November 17th YCCHS Health Educators will be at the Cottonwood Public Library for Coffee with the County. The monthly event is held to offer residents information on programs that YCCHS offers. Each month a new program is highlighted. This month, they will be providing free A1C blood tests to any resident who qualifies as prediabetic. The A1C test is a blood test that provides information about your average levels of blood glucose, also called blood sugar, over the past three months.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 1 in 3 adults – 96 million Americans – have prediabetes. More than 8 in 10 adults with prediabetes don’t know they have it. Additionally, about 20% of American adults with diabetes don’t know they have it.

Residents who attend the November 17th event and qualify as prediabetic will also have an opportunity to participate in the CDC’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) facilitated by YCCHS Health Educators. The lifestyle change program is an in-person structured program developed specifically to prevent type 2 diabetes.

The DDP program will start in January of 2023. Trained YCCHS Health Educators will lead the program helping participants change certain aspects of their lifestyle, like eating healthier, reducing stress, and getting more physical activity. The program also includes group support from others who share the same goals and struggles.
