Please join the Prescott Community for the Fall 2022 Colloquium Keynote: An Essential Toolkit for the Climate Generation from Dr. Sarah Jaquette Ray.

Dr. Sarah Jaquette Ray is chair of the Environmental Studies Department at Cal Poly Humboldt. Her first book, The Ecological Other: Environmental Exclusion in American Culture (U Arizona, 2013) examined how the emotion of disgust shapes the racism, ableism, and xenophobia of the mainstream U.S. environmental movement, a legacy that created the conditions for the kinds of green hate and eco-fascism we see in current politics. Her current work is at the intersection of justice, climate emotions, and the interplay between inner resilience and collective action. Her book on this research, A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety: How to Keep Your Cool on a Warming Planet (UC Press, 2020), is an existential toolkit for the climate justice movement. Ray's writing on emotions and climate justice has been published in the LA Times, Scientific American, The Cairo Review of Global Affairs, Edge Effects, KCET, and Zocalo Public Square. She consults extensively on the topic of climate anxiety, is working on an edited collection,  An Existential Toolkit for Climate Justice Educators offers a professional development workshop to help center emotions in climate work, the Climate Wisdom Lab, and leads mindfulness courses on transforming climate anxiety through Pacific Mindfulness.

Information about the Colloquium sessions can be found here.

Here’s a sample of the exciting events:

Asset Mapping Workshop: In this Asset Mapping workshop, students from all graduate programs are invited to share in this positive, interdisciplinary, networking opportunity. You'll meet others from your bioregion, get valuable resources, and hands-on experience with the tools and skills needed to engage organizations, communities, and project stakeholders in an asset-based approach to change-making.

Radical Approaches to Minimizing Burnout: Compassion and Sustainable Caring- This experiential session is open to anyone who would like to attend. We will begin with a brief introduction to some of the theories and research supporting the value of compassion practices for those engaging in care work (including human/social services, counseling, and other therapeutic work, social justice/advocacy/activism work, medical and caregiver work, teaching, etc.). Benefits include preventing burnout while remaining nourished, empathic, and caring towards ourselves and those we care for. The second part of this session will be centered around a guided experiential compassion practice, followed by a short reflective discussion.
