A local resident, Wendy Skaggs, has made a donation to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) K9 Unit following a holiday fundraiser in Prescott. The check was presented to Captain Jarrod Winfrey of YCSO. Captain Winfrey is known for his previous service in the K9 unit alongside his canine partner, Gemma.
K9 Gemma had received recognition by winning a National Police Canine Association case detection award in 2016. She later retired due to a knee injury and lived with Captain Winfrey’s family until her recent passing on December 20th as a result of age-related complications.
“She presented the check to YCSO Capt Jarrod Winfrey, himself a veteran of serving in the K9 unit with his partner, Gemma, who won a National Police Canine Association case detection award in 2016. K9 Gemma was permitted to retire a few years later due to a knee injury and then spent the rest of her days living with the Winfrey clan and playing daily with the family’s two boys, before being humanely euthanized December 20th due to complications of old age.”
