Sedona city council approves key projects; highlights from May meetings

The City of Sedona has released its monthly newsletter for May 2024, providing residents with updates on city events, decisions, and initiatives.

On May 14, the City Council approved several items on the consent agenda. This included a construction contract for eight new pickleball courts at Posse Grounds Park, not to exceed $1,598,975. Construction began on June 3 and is expected to be completed by fall. Additionally, a resolution was passed to execute an intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona Department of Transportation to design a shared-use path on Brewer Road at an approximate cost of $129,578.

Further on May 14, the council approved the construction contract for the Uptown Sedona Parking Garage project at a cost not exceeding $17,545,098 and additional professional services associated with its design amounting to $154,070. The council directed staff to prepare a revenue bond sale of $18 million to finance this project.

On May 28, the tentative city budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 was approved at $106,155,786. The final budget adoption is scheduled for June 25. Also on this date, an agreement was reached with Villas on Shelby LLC to develop 30 units of affordable housing. Exceptions were granted allowing buildings up to a height of 40 feet.

The same day saw an in-depth presentation about the Short-Term Rental Monitoring Program detailing timelines and procedures alongside information about a newly implemented permitting system.

On May 29, the Sustainability Department provided an update on the Climate Action Plan. Progress reported included advancements in the Green Fleet Policy and Municipal Sustainability Plan as well as an 8% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from 2018 levels.

In other developments:

- The Historical Ranger Station Park will see new features installed over several months including unique playground equipment and various fitness stations.

- ADOT’s project will cause daytime closures from June 3-7 and lane restrictions from June through August on SR 89A.

- Construction began on eight new pickleball courts at Posse Grounds Park.

- Four youth summer sports camps are open for registration along with specialty camps in various activities.

- Extended hours have been introduced at Sedona Community Pool which is now open until later in the evening during weekdays and weekends.

- Water aerobics classes commenced four days a week starting May 28.

Additionally:

- A rotating art program featuring works by Ed Buonvecchio and Terry Shoulders will be available for public viewing through September.

- The Historic Preservation Commission seeks one resident volunteer for a three-year term seat.

The Sustainability Department accepted Les Springs into its new Sustainable Neighborhoods Program.

Residents are encouraged to stay prepared as Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management launched a user-friendly website aimed at improving emergency preparedness.
