Arizona Rep. Eli Crane has expressed his support for Rep. Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House, stating that Jordan "threatens the status quo." Crane's endorsement comes as Jordan faces setbacks in his bid for the leadership position. In a second vote on Wednesday, 22 House Republicans voted against Jordan, slightly more than the 20 opposing votes he received in the first round. Despite these challenges, Jordan remains determined to gather the support needed to become the next Speaker.
The opposition to Jordan's candidacy has raised concerns among some Republican representatives, who feel pressured to vote for him due to their colleagues singling them out for not endorsing him. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy faced a similar challenge when it took 15 rounds of voting in January to secure his role as speaker.
The recent developments in the race for Speaker of the House were set in motion earlier this month when Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz initiated a vote to oust McCarthy from the position. The motion was successful, leading to the House being responsible for selecting a new Speaker. McCarthy subsequently announced that he would not seek re-election, leaving the position vacant.
Jim Jordan is known for being one of the "most conservative members of Congress" and a strong advocate for taxpayers. He is a supporter of former President Trump and played a key role in founding the House Freedom Caucus, serving as its first Chairman. Jordan currently represents Ohio's 4th District and holds leadership positions on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight Committee.
"The Swamp doesn't want Jim Jordan to be Speaker of the House," Crane stated in a post on the X platform, expressing his belief that the opposition to Jordan's candidacy is a sign that he poses a threat to the established order.
The debate surrounding Jordan's bid for Speaker of the House has also sparked strong reactions from others, such as Rogan O'Handley, Ambassador of Turning Point USA, who criticized the "Swamp 22" for claiming to be victims of intimidation tactics. O'Handley argued that these representatives are being called out by voters for prioritizing lobbyist money over their constituents' interests.
As the race for Speaker of the House continues, Jordan will need to rally support from his fellow Republicans and overcome the opposition he faces in order to secure the position.
