YCSO HIGHLIGHTS INTERNET SECURITY FOR OUR CHILDREN
Today is #SaferInternetDay. YCSO is joining law enforcement agencies around the country to bring awareness to both parents and children about the dangers of some online activity.
There are multiple ways our children can be exploited online, including falling prey to "catfishing" by adults, being subjected to participating in child pornography, or being lured to meet with predators. (Yes, we want to scare you. It can happen even here in our communities.) We ask you to be diligent in warning your kids about not meeting in person with anyone they don't know unless they tell a parent.
We all know the above issues are crimes, but one that is more common and one that our kids may be afraid to tell us about is Financial Sextortion. This is an online exploitation crime directed toward youth in which threats are used to demand money from the victim.
To parents: let you kids know that if this happens to them, that they can talk to you if they are afraid. To kids: please speak to someone you can trust and get help! You can call our office at 928-771-3260 and know that you will be treated with respect and be protected.
The internet is invaluable when used properly but it can also be a crime facilitation tool if we are not careful. Be aware, and be safe.
