Dear Prescott College Community,
As we celebrate the historic swearing in of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman ever to serve on the United States Supreme Court, we also mourn the recent decision which will impact women across our country. The June 24th ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Center overturned the previously-settled case of Roe v. Wade which had established women's Constitutional rights to abortion. While the decision in Dobbs does not mean that abortion is no longer legal, it has turned the decision to the states to make those laws regarding the legality or illegality of abortion. In many states, there will be a very real and rapid impact on women's rights to choose for themselves. As an institution rooted in racial justice and equity, we acknowledge that many communities are disproportionately impacted by this decision, and Prescott College stands in support of our students, faculty, and staff, both on-campus and remote. We will help women find healthy and safe access to abortion services as needed. In addition, today's Supreme Court decision limited the ability of the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, which presents a heartbreaking setback in the fight against climate change. Both the Dobbs decision and the decision to limit the EPA's authority are in direct opposition to Prescott College's mission to create a healthy, just, and sustainable world. At this time we look forward to hearing the opinions of those Supreme Court justices who dissent with these decisions, and call upon our legislators to act with integrity and urgency in the fights for women's rights and climate change. Prescott College will continue to stand with women and the environment in the challenges that lay ahead. In solidarity, Dr. Barbara Morris President Prescott College
