Two Arizona rest areas that have been shuttered for a while will be reopened temporarily to allow truckers that are hauling essentials during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Chino Valley News, the two rest areas are 17 Christensen and 40 Parks located west and south of Flagstaff, respectively. These rest areas offer basic amenities such as hand-washing stations, portable toilets and free parking for truckers.

John Halikowski, ADOT Director, issued a statement regarding this move. He said the decision to open these rest areas is to make truck drivers’ lives comfortable as they strive to supply the much-needed supplies across the state.

However, the new rest areas are exclusively for commercial vehicles, with the rest of ADOT rests accessible to all travelers.

Christensen and Parks were closed in 2002 and 2009, respectively, and there are no plans to keep them open permanently. ADOT plans to close them down once the COVID-19 pandemic is managed.
