June 2, Republican governors sent a joint letter to Congressional leadership calling for the swift passage of The Secure America Act to provide sustained funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The letter, signed by 22 Republican governors, expresses support for the legislation and criticizes Senate Democrats for not funding the agencies. According to the letter, “As Republican governors of states tasked with protecting our citizens, we write to express our strong support for swift enactment of The Secure America Act, legislation to provide sustained funding to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). … Senate Democrats have refused to fund CBP and ICE, using the brave and selfless men and women of CBP and ICE as pawns and collateral damage to their political cause. Governors will only be as successful as their federal partners, and Senate Democrats are failing to fulfill the basic federal responsibility of funding key portions of our federal law enforcement system.”
The Secure America Act, also known as S. 2, is currently under consideration in Congress. The full text of the bill is available on the Congressional website, according to Congress.gov.
Signatories to the letter include Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama, Governor Mike Dunleavy of Alaska, Governor Sarah Sanders of Arkansas, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia, Governor Brad Little of Idaho, Governor Mike Braun of Indiana, Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa, Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana, Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi, Governor Mike Kehoe of Missouri, Governor Greg Gianforte of Montana, Governor Jim Pillen of Nebraska, Governor Joe Lombardo of Nevada, Governor Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, Governor Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, Governor Henry Dargan McMaster of South Carolina, Governor Larry Rhoden of South Dakota, Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas, Governor Spencer Cox of Utah, Governor Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia, and Governor Mark Gordon of Wyoming.
The Republican Governors Association distributed the letter and related information through its press office and official website.
