U.S. Representative Eli Crane, who serves Arizona’s 2nd district, has voiced concerns about the presence of Chinese students at American universities, citing national security risks in a series of posts on August 26, 2025.
In a post made at 19:23 UTC, Crane stated, “This is from June, and it just scratches the surface. We should not be allowing students from adversarial countries, particularly China, to come to America to ‘study.’ This is a proven national security threat.”
Shortly after, at 19:34 UTC, he added another brief comment: “Huge.”
Later that evening at 19:56 UTC, Crane expanded on his stance by posting: “Here is roughly 10 minutes worth of reasons we shouldn’t let 600,000 students from China (CCP) come study at universities in America. It’s a massive national security threat. I’m a hard no.”
Crane’s remarks are part of an ongoing debate regarding foreign student enrollment from countries considered adversarial by some lawmakers. The U.S. has historically welcomed international students for higher education opportunities but recent years have seen heightened scrutiny over potential espionage and technology transfer risks associated with students from China.
Eli Crane has represented Arizona’s 2nd District in Congress since 2023 after succeeding Tom O’Halleran. Born in Tucson in 1980 and currently residing in Oro Valley, Crane continues to engage publicly on issues related to national security and foreign policy.
