The federal government entered a shutdown after the House of Representatives passed a funding extension through November 21, 2025, which still requires approval from the U.S. Senate. The measure needs 60 votes to proceed but currently has support from only two Democrats and one Independent, leaving it short by five Democratic votes.
Representative Eli Crane (R-AZ) has requested that his salary be withheld during the shutdown, stating that it is inappropriate for members of Congress to receive pay while many Americans are furloughed or experiencing delayed paychecks. “He believes it is inappropriate to receive a salary while many Americans are furloughed or facing delayed paychecks.”
Crane has also cosponsored a constitutional amendment introduced by Representative Ralph Norman (R-SC). This amendment would prohibit lawmakers from receiving pay during government shutdowns and prevent them from receiving any back pay afterward. “Furthermore, Rep. Crane has cosponsored a constitutional amendment introduced by Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), which would prohibit lawmakers from receiving pay during government shutdowns. It would also preclude Members of Congress from receiving any back pay afterward.”
Despite disruptions in many federal agencies due to the shutdown, Crane’s offices will remain open to assist constituents with casework or other questions.
Eli Crane began serving as the representative for Arizona’s 2nd district in 2023, succeeding Tom O’Halleran. He was born in Tucson in 1980 and currently resides in Oro Valley.
