A recent report by the Senate Finance Committee regarding the care of patients in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic reveals the need for U.S. Sen. Martha McSally's (R-Arizona) bill that will allow nursing homes to quickly identify and contain COVID-19 cases.

The Emergency Support for Nursing Homes and Elder Justice Reform Act would ensure Arizona nursing homes and care facilities were able to purchase needed personal protective equipment. It would also make sure diagnostic testing was readily available for these populations.

“We must do more to protect Arizona seniors who continue to be one of the most vulnerable populations during the coronavirus pandemic,” McSally said in a release. “This Senate Finance Committee report confirms that one of the best steps Congress can take to better protect our seniors right now is to pass my legislation to provide increased personal protective equipment and COVID-19 testing to our senior care facilities.”

The report reveals nursing homes on both sides of the coin – those that have responded quickly and appropriately to coronavirus patients and those that have instead been overwhelmed. Policies to promote health and safety of older Americans living in care facilities were suggested in the report.
